Let’s never speak of this day again The Texas Rangers scored twelve runs while the Oakland Athletics scored eleven runs.
Good heavens.
That was far, far, far too much baseball in one day played at the horror house known as Oakland Coliseum. There were walks and balks and blown calls and sun balls and just about everything you might expect from a game in Oakland and they made them do it twice in row.
The Rangers won but they lost Josh Sborz, Josh Smith got dinged up, Kirby Yates has an ERA, and they still don’t know if they can rely on Jack Leiter (4 ER in 4 IP) to make starts while the rotation is like ten starters deep.
Nevertheless, the Rangers did score a bunch of runs on a bunch of hits and won the game and the series and they can rest after this nightmare of a day tomorrow and reassess before continuing their road trip in Colorado.
Also, hey, the Mariners and Astros lost so the Rangers are back alone in first place in the AL West.
Player of the Game: Arguably it is Marcus Semien who reached four times in the second game after three hits in the opener but I want to give a special nod to David Robertson who came on for the injured Sborz mid-PA in a then 7-6 game in the sixth and worked around Sborz’s leadoff walk and a 3-1 count on the inherited hitter to keep Texas up (which included a two-out, bases loaded strikeout of Shea Langeliers who, you guessed it, also homered in this one) before throwing what should have been an immaculate seventh if not for the utter incompetency of on display by the umpiring crew for 18 excruciating innings of baseball today.
Bidding for an immaculate inning, David Robertson sees this pitch called a ball by Laz Diaz. pic.twitter.com/mXs2J2IR4V— Jeff Wilson (@JeffWilsonTXR) May 9, 2024
Up Next: No baseball tomorrow but the Rangers next open a series against the Rockies with a couple of hurlers yet to be named currently listed.
The Friday evening first pitch from Coors Field is scheduled for 7:40 pm CT and will be aired on BS Southwest.
