Dinner in the Dark

Everyone needs to eat. It is one of the simple things we take for granted…at least for those of us who are not visually impaired. Come out to Dinner in the Dark, and experience a little bit of life the way a visually impaired person lives. The evening will begin with you being blindfolded and lead to your table by a Lions Club member. There you will attempt to find the Fried Ravioli appetizers and dips that are already on the table. The same goes for your iced tea or water. Can you find the sugar and get it in to your tea successfully? Next, your meal will be served. You can choose between Meatball Spaghetti, Parmesan Chicken on Angel Hair Pasta, Lemon Tuscan Chicken on Penne Pasta and Primavera Pasta (vegetarian). Hopefully, you can find your fork (no knives will be on the table!). Can you eat without seeing your food? Mark Prentice, with Leader Dogs for the Blind will begin his presentation, and you will have the opportunity to visualize in your mind what he is talking about. Then, Mr. Prentice will instruct you to remove your blindfold, and you can see what you have been missing (and how much if it is on your shirt!). The meal will conclude with mini-strawberry cheesecake desserts.

The purpose of the evening is to have fun, while giving everyone an opportunity to learn the difficulties those of us with vision impairment deal with every day. The Lions Club will use the proceeds from the dinner to assist those less economically fortunate in our community to get free vision screenings, eye doctor visits, and glasses if needed. The Greater Athens Area Lions Club also wants to get into the local schools, and screen kids for vision issues that can still be corrected while they are young. Vision is the mission of our club. Come help us help those in our community who need vision assistance and can’t afford it. And, have a good meal and some fun while you’re at it!

Tickets and Sponsorships must be purchased by 6:00 p.m. on Friday, September 30th.
